The difference between dutasteride and finasteride is that dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5α∹-reductase, and is said to be more effective at suppressing the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) than finasteride, which only inhibits type II . Type I 5α - reductase is distributed in hair papilla cells throughout the body, while type II 5α -reductase is distributed in the frontal and vertex areas, so dutasteride, which acts on both, is said to be more effective in treating hair loss over a wider area than finasteride.
